Sergeant Major Paul J. Nugent enlisted in the Marine Corps in January of 1979.  He attended boot camp at MCRD San Diego, CA where he graduated as the platoon honor man and was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class.  After graduation, PFC Nugent went to PFRC School Camp Lejeune, NC where he was the distinguished graduate and meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal.  From PFRC School, LCpl Nugent joined 3rd FSSG in Okinawa.  Before leaving Okinawa, he was meritoriously promoted to Corporal.

In August of 1980, Cpl Nugent joined MSG Bn for class 5-80.  Upon graduation from school he served two successful tours in Kingston,   Jamaica and Lisbon, Portugal.  While stationed in Kingston, Jamaica he received a letter of commendation from the American Ambassador and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Sgt Nugent left the Security Guard Program in March of 1983, and entered the HAWK field.  He attended the USAADC School in Fort Bliss, Texas where he received the MOS 5923;  then assigned to 3rd LAAM Bn, Cherry Point, NC.  In May of 1985, he attended HAWK’s Secondary School at Redstone Arsenal, AL where he received the Distinguished Graduate Award and was promoted to Staff Sergeant.  Upon      graduation from HAWK’s Secondary School, SSgt Nugent proceeded to 2nd LAAM Bn, Yuma, AZ.  While with 2nd LAAM, he did two UDP deployments to Okinawa, Japan, plus other deployments to       include participation in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

SSgt Nugent attended MSG Bn’s Detachment Commanders Class 5-91.  Upon graduation he received     orders to MSG Detachment Calcutta, India where he deactivated the Detachment.  In April of 1992, he was assigned as the Detachment Commander MSG Detachments Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.  After a successful tour in Santo Domingo, he was assigned as the Detachment Commander MSG Detachment Colombo, Sri Lanka .  GySgt Nugent left the Security Guard Program in March of 1995 when assigned to 3rd LAAD Bn, Camp Pendleton, CA.  Upon selection to First Sergeant, he received orders to Weapons Field Training Battalion, Camp Pendleton, where he served as the First Sergeant of Headquarters and Service Company.  In July of 1998, he rejoined Marine Security Guard Battalion as the Company First Sergeant for “C” Company, Bangkok, Thailand.  After another successful tour with the Security Guard Program,  1st Sgt Nugent received orders to 2nd LAR Bn, Camp Lejeune where he served as the Weapons Company First Sergeant.  Upon selection to Sergeant Major, he received orders to Recruiting Station Seattle, Washington where he served as the Station’s Sergeant Major until May of 2005, when he was assigned as the Sergeant Major of Marine Security Guard Battalion.

His personal awards include:  The Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal fourth award, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal eighth award, National Defense Service Medal second award, Korean Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal Saudi Arabia and the Kuwait Liberation Medal Kuwait.
