I had hoped to send a photo & explain the significance of it but my computer skills are lacking and I could not. But please imagine a practice football field with a paved road on one side of it. In the background is a two-story school building. Today it is the Monroeville Jr High School located in Monroeville, Al. The photo I have was taken in front of a house that was the home of Harper Lee, author of "To Kill A Mockingbird". The author Truman Capote spent much of his early life living with relatives in Monroeville as well. In the 1960's the field was the practice field for Monroe County High School football team and the school in the background was Monroe County High School (MCHS). I remember in the fall of 1966 & 1967 practicing football until dark and after practice someone saying the woman walking on the paved road next to the field was Harper Lee. However, to most of us at our age that didn't mean much because on our personal agendas TKAM the book was far down on the list from football and girls. Today Monroeville claims the title of "the Literary Capital of Alabama" and Miss Nelle (Harper Lee) still resides in Monroeville. Why mention all of this on the MEGA website? The high school in the background of the practice field is the school where Cpl James Marshall was a member of the graduation class of 1964. Cpl Marshall was the first MSG to die from hostile action on Jan 31, 1968 in Saigon. Marshall Hall in Quantico is named in his honor. Cpl Marshall's sister, Kay Marshall (Hobbs), was a student in the 1968 graduation class at MCHS. Two of her classmates were Wayne Turberville and Edward Philen. Wayne, Edward, and I had many pleasant (and unpleasant) memories from the practice football field. Wayne and Edward both enlisted in the Marine Corps following their high school days. Wayne left for recruit training at PI on May 28,1968 - the day after the graduation exercises on Monday night. Edward enlisted in the fall of 1969 and left for MCRD PI in Dec 1969. After tours in Vietnam and Puerto Rico, Sgt Charles Wayne Turberville graduated from Embassy school in the old MSG Battalion and received orders for Phnom Penh, Cambodia. On September 26, 1971 he became the second MSG to die as a result of hostile action when Khmer Rouge terrorist threw explosives at the Marines as they played softball on the embassy grounds. Four other MSGs were critically injured, one of them being NCOIC MGySgt Harry Lock. Wayne's friend and classmate (and my brother) Edward Philen was stationed at the Naval Weapons Station in Concord, CA in base security. At the request of the Turberville family, Edward received orders to be Marine Escort for burial and met Wayne's body in Dover, Del and escorted him home. Today, 43 years later, Edward and I have worked with our county commission to have a 5-mile section of County Road 17 to be named the "Sgt Charles Wayne Turberville Memorial Highway". This highway is out in the very rural area of Monroe County but is the road that Wayne grew up on and 0.3 mile from the home site is Bryant Cemetery where he is buried. On Sunday, October 19th, a dedication service will be held to unveil the memorial signs and then a memorial service in his memory at his home church, Eureka Baptist Church, Finchburg, Al. The featured speaker for the memorial service will be Lt.Cmd.Bradford Charles Tonder of the US Navy. NAVY? Brad is the son of Wayne's sister ; he enlisted in the Navy in the early 1990's - at some point completed officer training - has degrees from the Citadel - and a very accomplished military career. He was born in 1972 following Wayne's death and is named in Wayne's memory (Charles). When I told Wayne's older brother what we were attempting to do(and we did meet some resistance to begin with) he said he thought everyone had forgot Wayne. We want to make this a special day in Wayne's memory and for his family. If you served with Wayne in basic, Vietnam, Puerto Rico, Camp Lejeune,Pendleton, Embassy School, or Phnom Penh OR if you are a former MSG or the Marine Corps is part of your family please accept this post as an invitation to attend. It means so much to the family and we would gladly have you to attend. Southern hospitality means a meal following the memorial service and "mess halls" at Baptist churches in the south are pretty good! If you need more information or think you might attend you may contact me by email ( wrphilen@frontiernet.net ) or my brother Edward at jphilen@frontiernet.net . We do hope some MSGs can attend. "The best way for our country to honor the sacrifices made by our fallen and their families is to never forget them" - Siobhan Fallon, Author - Ronnie Philen Beatrice, Al Monroe County Alabama

A couple of months ago, a former GySgt., former NCOIC of the Marine Detachment at the Embassy in Prague, Czech Republic, Joshua Ortizhartshorn became the 1st. Sgt. at the Reserve Center in Folsom, PA. Do any of you know him? He promises to join us in Providence next June. I met He was in combat in the SandBox a few years ago with a gentlemen named Ryan Cohen. Major Cohen is now the CO of the Recruiting Headquarters here in OKC. I don't think that I will have any trouble getting some Marine goodies fro m the Recruiters for our next Reunion. Semper Fi…… Denny

It was with great sadness today that I learned my fellow Geneva Marine and good friend, MSgt Angelo "Goody" Goodwin (Monrovia '84-'86; Geneva '86-'87) passed away unexpectedly. After 25 years in the Corps ('80-'05), he retired after serving with 8th&I Barracks, Washington DC. Goody, as his name suggests, was a good-hearted Marine. I fondly remember teaching him how to ski at Flaine, France... (yes, I may have pushed him down the slope the first time--and laughed a few times as he was getting back up on the button lift). He was a good person, a good Marine, and a damn good friend.... He will be missed. Nevertheless, I am sure God called him to serve one more time because he needed another Marine to guard the streets of Heaven. So... Semper fi friend, and someday I hope to relieve you on post, just as I did in Geneva.
